What is a Climate Action Plan (CAP)?

A Climate Action Plan (CAP) is a whole-school plan that sets out how we will reduce our impact on the environment, prepare for the effects of climate change, and teach students the skills they need for a greener future.

It looks at everything we do as a school — how we teach, how we use energy and resources, how we care for our grounds, and how we work with families and the local community — and asks:

  • How can we be more environmentally friendly?
  • How can we reduce waste and carbon emissions?
  • How can we help students understand and take action on climate change?
  • How can we make our school healthier, greener, and more resilient for the future?

All education settings in England are being encouraged to have a Climate Action Plan in place by 2025, supported by the Department for Education (DfE).

Why is Climate Action Important?

Climate change affects everyone — including children and young people. Schools play a vital role in:

  • Protecting the future by reducing environmental impact
  • Educating students about climate change, sustainability, and green careers
  • Encouraging responsibility and leadership in young people
  • Creating healthier learning environments for students and staff

By taking action now, we are helping students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to care for the planet and their communities.

Our Vision at Madeley School

At Madeley School, we want to be a place where students learn not just about the world, but how to look after it.

Our Climate Action Plan reflects our commitment to:

  • Environmental responsibility
  • Sustainability and climate resilience
  • Student voice and leadership
  • Positive action that makes a real difference

We believe every member of our school community — students, staff, families, and partners — has a role to play.

What Our Climate Action Plan Focuses On

Our plan takes a whole-school approach, meaning sustainability is part of everyday school life.

  •  Learning About the Environment

We are embedding climate and environmental education across subjects so students:

  • Understand climate change and sustainability
  • Learn problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Explore future green careers

♻️ Sustainable School Practices

We are working to reduce our environmental footprint by:

  • Saving energy and using resources more efficiently
  • Reducing waste and increasing recycling
  • Conserving water
  • Encouraging sustainable travel where possible

Student Voice and Leadership

Students are at the heart of our plan. We support:

  • Student-led projects and eco-clubs
  • Climate ambassadors and sustainability champions
  • Opportunities for students to share ideas and take action

Working With Our Community

We are building partnerships with:

  • Families and carers
  • Local organisations
  • Environmental groups and councils

Together, we can create positive change beyond the school gates.

A Greener School Environment

We aim to create a healthier place to learn by:

  • Improving our school buildings and outdoor spaces
  • Supporting biodiversity and nature on site
  • Exploring renewable and eco-friendly solutions

Working Together for the Future

This Climate Action Plan has been developed with support from Climate Ambassadors, a DfE-funded programme helping schools across the country take meaningful climate action.

Our plan supports national goals to:

  • Reduce carbon emissions
  • Adapt to climate change
  • Protect nature and biodiversity
  • Deliver high-quality climate education

Looking Ahead

Our Climate Action Plan is not a one-off document — it is an ongoing commitment.

By working together, we aim to:

  • Reduce our impact on the planet
  • Empower students to be confident, informed citizens
  • Inspire positive action now and for future generations

We are proud to be taking steps towards a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for our school community.
