Inspiring Excellence: Elite Performers Statement
At Madeley School we are committed to providing the support required for aspirational athletes and performers to achieve their academic potential and as well as their dreams. We understand that some students may need support in balancing the demands of performance excellence and academic requirements. We have many talented young people and we wish to foster their talents in order to achieve through a commitment to pastoral care and enrichment.
Elite Performers: Criteria
· Pupils inspire excellence to their commitment to activities outside of school such as sport, musical performances or drama.
· Pupils who compete in sports at a County or National level.
· Pupils who perform in productions (such as drama or musical theatre) for professional theatre companies.
· Pupils who belong to National Orchestras or similar. Our Support Pledge In order to support our pupils in the pursuit of excellence outside of school, we make the following pledge to all elite students:
1. Working collaboratively with parents to agree authorised time out of school for relevant competitions and performances (for example, to take part in productions at local theatres).
2. Should time be missed from school, the school will provide suitable work for catch-up. This will ensure that learning is not disrupted but that pupils are not overwhelmed. Again, this will be in agreement with class teachers.
3. To extend homework deadlines when free time has been taken up with events. This will be in agreement with individual class teachers.
4. All staff will be supportive and encouraging of the pupils who take part in advanced or elite extra[1]curricular activities beyond school provision.
5. In relation to sporting events, GCSE core PE time may be used to catch up on homework in negotiation with PE staff.
6. If parents inform the school of events and dates, this information will be shared with the whole staff so that we can be understanding of the pressures on the pupils.
We also expect the following from our pupils and parents/carers:
1. Pupils will complete catch-up work set by the school, and parents/carers will support the school in this.
2. Parents/carers will work collaboratively with the school in planning support and time for their child to balance their performance and school commitments. Time out of school must be agreed and proportionate.
3. Parents/carers will inform the school when their child is taking part in an activity which may affect their school work or progress.
